Learn while you earn

The chance to gain a recognised qualification for free while learning on the job in a profession that makes a real difference in people’s lives is more appealing thanks to an exciting new training programme from national hearing therapy provider Life Unlimited.

It’s a golden opportunity for anyone looking to retrain with recruitment currently underway to fill a hearing therapist position within Life Unlimited’s Wellington team.

“We’re very pleased to be able to offer future hearing therapist candidates the opportunity to gain the New Zealand Diploma in Hearing Therapy level 6,” says Life Unlimited Hearing service manager Sally Taylor.

“This new qualification reflects the complex work our hearing therapists carry out and the specialist knowledge required to provide a quality aural rehabilitation service to New Zealanders.”

Life Unlimited is funded by the Ministry of Health to support New Zealand adults living with hearing loss. The organisation also delivers the two-year, part-time diploma to trainee hearing therapists with the support of Careerforce, the industry training organisation for the health and wellbeing sector.

Trish Carraher, training coordinator for the diploma, says designing the new programme has been both challenging and hugely rewarding.

“After consultation with Careerforce, we’ve upgraded the National Diploma in Hearing Therapy level 5, which we registered 15 years ago, to level six. This is an acknowledgement of the added expertise of our hearing therapists who support people with hearing impairment and their families to live well with hearing loss.

“The qualification gives hearing therapists the tools to problem solve hearing challenges with their clients so they can make the most of their hearing and communication abilities and get the best use out of hearing aids and other assistive technology.”

The training programme involves an intensive period of online and face-to-face training including a five-week practicum, followed by on-job learning and assessment over an 18-20 month period.
